In this guide
Quick take: For a first Andaman trip, do not try to conquer the whole archipelago. Build the trip around Port Blair, Swaraj Dweep, still commonly called Havelock, and Shaheed Dweep, still commonly called Neil. This gives you history, beaches, ferries, reefs and slow island time without turning the holiday into a luggage relay.
Best time to go
- November to April: Best overall window for beach time, diving, ferries and families.
- May: Hotter and more humid, but still workable if you keep plans light.
- June to September: Monsoon. Expect rain, rougher seas, ferry disruption and fewer reliable water-activity windows.
- October: Shoulder month. Can be lovely, but keep weather buffers.
The simple first-timer route
- Port Blair: Arrival, Cellular Jail, museums, marina walks and ferry buffer.
- Swaraj Dweep: Radhanagar Beach, Kala Pathar, Elephant Beach access when conditions allow, scuba or snorkelling with certified operators.
- Shaheed Dweep: Bharatpur, Laxmanpur sunset, Natural Bridge at correct tide and a slower village-island mood.
Ferr ferry logic
Ferries are the spine of an Andaman trip. Government and private vessels connect Port Blair, Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep, but schedules can change with weather and operations. Book popular legs early, keep ID handy, reach the jetty well before reporting time and avoid scheduling a flight out immediately after an inter-island ferry. The sea gets the final vote.
Beach rules that matter
- Swim only where local lifeguards or signs allow it.
- Do not enter the sea after dark or after alcohol.
- Do not touch, stand on or pocket coral.
- Do not collect shells, starfish or marine life for photos.
- Check tide timing before visiting Natural Bridge on Shaheed Dweep.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid stepping on shallow reef flats.
Diving and snorkelling
Choose certified operators, ask about instructor ratios, do not dive if you are congested or flying too soon after diving, and listen during the briefing even if you have done a dozen beach trips elsewhere. The Andamans are generous underwater, but coral ecosystems are slow to recover from careless fins and hands.
Suggested 7-day plan
- Day 1: Arrive Port Blair. Cellular Jail light and sound if timing works.
- Day 2: Ferry to Swaraj Dweep. Radhanagar sunset.
- Day 3: Dive, snorkel or slow beach day.
- Day 4: Kala Pathar morning, relaxed island evening.
- Day 5: Ferry to Shaheed Dweep. Laxmanpur sunset.
- Day 6: Bharatpur and Natural Bridge by tide. Ferry to Port Blair if your flight is next day.
- Day 7: Fly out with buffer.
Responsible Andamans
Respect tribal reserve restrictions, do not chase remote islands without permission, avoid plastic-heavy picnics, dress sensibly in villages and support operators who explain safety instead of promising shortcuts. The best Andaman trip feels easy because it was planned with the ocean, not against it.
