Athirappilly is Kerala's largest waterfall — a broad curtain of water on the Chalakudy river, often called the 'Niagara of South India' — with the quieter Vazhachal falls close by. Here's how to visit.

NatureWaterfallsDay Trip

An easy drive inland from Kochi, on the edge of the Sholayar rainforests, Athirappilly is the largest waterfall in Kerala — and one of South India's most cinematic (you've likely seen it in the movies). Paired with the gentler Vazhachal falls nearby, it makes a lovely day trip or overnight from Kochi or Thrissur.

Athirappilly Falls

On the Chalakudy River in Thrissur district, Athirappilly drops about 25 m (roughly 80 ft) in a broad, thundering curtain — earning it the nickname the "Niagara of South India". A short forest path leads to a viewpoint at the top, and another down toward the base for the full head-on view (spray guaranteed in the monsoon). It's at its most powerful during and just after the rains.

Vazhachal Falls

Just a few kilometres upstream, Vazhachal is a wider, gentler cascade set against dense forest that's home to endangered and endemic species (including rare hornbills). It's calmer and less crowded than Athirappilly — a nice contrast on the same trip.

Best time to visit

For sheer volume, come during or just after the monsoon (roughly June–September, into October), when the falls are at full roar. Winter (November–February) is more comfortable for travel with the water still flowing well. Summers are the weakest for flow.

How to reach

Athirappilly is about 60–70 km from Kochi and a similar distance from Thrissur — an easy road trip via Chalakudy. The nearest airport is Kochi (Cochin International).

Where to stay

Most visit as a day trip, but there are resorts and homestays near the falls and along the Chalakudy river for those who want to linger by the forest.

Costs (indicative)

Very low — a modest entry ticket plus transport. A guide isn't needed, though the forest around Vazhachal rewards a slow look.

Responsible travel

The rocks around the falls are dangerously slippery and there are drownings most years — stay behind barriers and never wade into the water above or near the falls. Carry out all trash, don't play loud music, and respect the surrounding reserve forest.
