If you see only one thing in central Karnataka, make it the Hoysala temples. Built in the 12th–13th centuries and carved from soft soapstone into almost impossible detail, the temples at Belur and Halebidu were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 (as part of the "Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas", alongside Somanathapura). They're close together near the town of Hassan and are usually seen as a pair.
Belur — the Chennakeshava Temple
The Chennakeshava Temple at Belur, commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana, is a living temple (still in worship) famous for its madanika bracket figures — celestial maidens carved with breathtaking finesse — and its lathe-turned pillars, no two alike. Come in the morning for the light and the temple ritual.
Halebidu — the Hoysaleswara Temple
About 16 km away, the Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu (the old Hoysala capital, Dwarasamudra) is a twin-shrine temple to Shiva, wrapped in continuous bands of relief — elephants, lions, horsemen, gods and epic scenes — that reward slow, close looking. Many consider its exterior friezes the high point of Hoysala art.

Plan My Trip →How they differ (and what to look for)
Belur's fame rests on its figure sculpture (the madanikas); Halebidu's on its narrative friezes and sheer density of carving. A knowledgeable guide is genuinely worth it here — the iconography and craftsmanship are easy to walk past without one.
Nearby: Shravanabelagola
Complete the "Hassan triangle" with Shravanabelagola, where the colossal monolithic statue of Bahubali (Gomateshwara) crowns a rock hill — a major Jain pilgrimage site reached by a barefoot stair climb.
Best time to visit
October to March for comfortable sightseeing. Mornings are best for photography and to beat the heat on the open temple platforms.
How to reach
Base in Hassan (well connected by road and rail), from where Belur and Halebidu are short drives. The pair is also an easy add to a Chikmagalur or Mysore itinerary.
Where to stay
Hassan has the most hotels; there are simpler stays near Belur/Halebidu and estate options toward Chikmagalur.
Costs (indicative)
Modest ASI entry fees plus a guide (recommended) and transport. Very affordable overall.
Responsible travel
These are fragile carvings and, at Belur, an active place of worship — don't touch the reliefs, follow temple dress/photography rules, remove footwear where required, and keep the complexes litter-free.
