Cao Bang: The Untamed Frontier

Cao Bang is a mountainous province in northeastern Vietnam bordering China. Designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark, it features stunning karst formations, deep valleys, caves, and one of the world's most spectacular border waterfalls.

Ban Gioc Waterfall

Ban Gioc is the largest waterfall in Vietnam and the fourth largest border waterfall in the world, split between Vietnam and China. Fed by the Quay Son River, the falls cascade down three tiers of limestone cliffs.

  • Bamboo Rafts: You can pay 50,000 VND to ride a bamboo raft that takes you right up to the mist of the falling water. Keep your passport handy as this is a sensitive border area.
  • Best time to visit: The water volume is highest during the rainy season (August to September).

Nguom Ngao Cave (Tiger Cave)

Located just 4km from Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao is an incredible 2km-long limestone cave system. Filled with unique stalactites and stalagmites shaped like lotus flowers and trees, it has a fast-flowing underground river. Entrance is 45,000 VND.

Pac Bo Historical Site

For history enthusiasts, Pac Bo Cave is a sacred site. This is where Ho Chi Minh lived in 1941 after returning from 30 years of exile. See the small cave, the stone table where he worked, and the turquoise Karl Marx Peak stream.
