The Serene Wilderness of Con Dao
Con Dao is an archipelago of 16 mountainous islands located off the southern coast of Vietnam. Once a notorious penal colony, it has transformed into a peaceful tropical paradise with empty beaches, coral reefs, and dense national parks.
Getting There: Flights vs. Ferries
Con Dao is remote, making transport planning essential:
- By Air: Vietnam Airlines and Vasco fly turboprop aircraft to Con Dao (VCS) from Ho Chi Minh City or Can Tho. Flights take around 45 minutes but tickets can sell out weeks in advance.
- By Sea: High-speed car ferries run from Vung Tau or Soc Trang to Con Dao. The Vung Tau ferry takes about 3.5 to 4 hours and can be rough during monsoon seasons.
Con Dao Prison and History
The islands have a dark past, having served as a political prison under both French colonial rule and the American-backed South Vietnamese government. Visit the **Con Dao Prison Complex**, including the infamous **Tiger Cages**, where prisoners were kept in open-topped concrete cells and beaten. It is a sobering experience that explains the deep national pride of the islanders.
Turtle Nesting on Bay Canh Island
Con Dao National Park is Vietnam's most important sea turtle nesting ground. From **June to September**, you can book an overnight tour through the National Park office to visit **Bay Canh Island** and watch green sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach, and help release baby turtles into the sea at dawn.
