Plan Diu as a relaxed Gujarat add-on with Diu Fort, beaches, Portuguese churches, Naida Caves, transport, legal cautions, safety and a 2 to 3 day route.

Quick take: Diu is a relaxed coastal add-on to Gujarat: small enough for 2 or 3 days, easy to combine with Somnath and Gir, and different from mainland Gujarat because of its island pace and Portuguese-era heritage.

Who should choose Diu?

Choose Diu if you want beaches, fort walls, churches, seafood, coastal cycling and a quiet reset after temple or wildlife travel in Gujarat. Do not choose it expecting Goa-scale nightlife. The best version of Diu is slow, sunny and low-pressure.

Top places to include

  • Diu Fort: The headline heritage site, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and set dramatically by the sea.
  • St Paul's Church: One of the key Portuguese church landmarks in Diu town.
  • Naida Caves: Photogenic rock-cut passages and light shafts, best visited outside peak heat.
  • Nagoa or Ghoghla Beach: Useful for beach time, but always check local swimming conditions.
  • Panikota views: Good from the fort or waterfront when visibility is clear.

Suggested 3-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrive and slow beach evening

Arrive from Somnath, Gir, Veraval or by flight if available. Keep the first evening for a beach walk and an early dinner rather than racing through the fort.

Day 2: Fort, churches and old town

Visit Diu Fort in the morning, then see the old-town churches and museum side depending on opening hours. Go back to the coast for sunset, because Diu works best when heritage and sea time are balanced.

Day 3: Naida Caves and Gujarat onward route

See Naida Caves early for better light and fewer crowds. Continue toward Somnath, Gir or Junagadh if Diu is part of a larger Gujarat route.

How to reach

Diu has an airport with changing flight schedules, so confirm current operations before planning around it. The nearest major rail approach for many routes is Veraval, commonly used for Somnath and Gir connections, with road travel onward to Diu.

Best season

November to February is the most comfortable season. Summer can be hot and humid. Monsoon can be atmospheric, but beach swimming and boat plans need caution because sea conditions change quickly.

  • Do not swim where locals or lifeguards advise against it.
  • Use caution around cave edges, fort walls and sea-facing ramparts.
  • Diu alcohol rules differ from dry Gujarat, but carrying alcohol across state or territory borders can create legal trouble. Check current rules and keep it simple.
  • Dress respectfully in churches and residential lanes.

PlanMyOffbeat tip

The smoothest route is Gir or Somnath to Diu for 2 nights, then onward to Junagadh, Rajkot or Bhavnagar. Diu is a reset point, not a place to over-schedule.
