Gulmarg and Pahalgam are the two meadows that define a classic Kashmir trip: Gulmarg for its ski slopes and record-breaking cable car, Pahalgam for its river valleys and pine forests. Paired with a couple of nights in Srinagar, they make an easy, scenic 5-day loop.

Gulmarg: meadow of flowers

At around 2,650 m, Gulmarg ("meadow of flowers") is a summer walking base and one of India's premier ski resorts in winter. Its headline attraction is the Gulmarg Gondola, among the highest cable-car systems in the world, operated by the J&K Cable Car Corporation.

Gulmarg Gondola — the two phases

  • Phase 1: Gulmarg (~2,650 m / 8,700 ft) up to Kongdori — a short ride over pine forest, popular with families and beginner skiers.
  • Phase 2: Kongdori up to Apharwat Peak at about 3,980 m (13,780 ft), with sweeping Pir Panjal views (and, on clear days, distant Nanga Parbat).

Tickets are sold per phase and can sell out in peak season — book ahead where possible, dress warmly for the top even in summer, and take altitude gain gently.

Pahalgam: valley of shepherds

Set on the Lidder River, Pahalgam is a green base for gentle valley excursions and a starting point of the Amarnath pilgrimage. The classic side trips:

  • Betaab Valley — a lush, photogenic river valley.
  • Aru Valley — meadows and the trailhead for longer treks.
  • Chandanwari — upstream toward the Amarnath route.

Best time to visit

April to October for green meadows, flowers and comfortable hiking; December to February for snow and skiing in Gulmarg. Spring (April–May) brings blossom; autumn brings golden chinar colour around Srinagar.

How to reach

Fly to Srinagar, then drive: Gulmarg is roughly a couple of hours from the city, and Pahalgam is a similar drive in the other direction. Many travellers base in Srinagar (Dal Lake houseboats) and do each as a day trip or short overnight.

Practical and safety notes

Note that only postpaid Indian SIM cards work reliably in Jammu & Kashmir — arrange connectivity accordingly. Mountain weather changes fast, so carry warm layers year-round for the gondola top and high valleys. As with any region where conditions can change, check current official travel advisories before booking and use reputable, registered local operators.

Where to stay

Gulmarg has hotels and resorts near the meadow; Pahalgam has riverside hotels and lodges; Srinagar offers houseboats and hotels. Book ahead in peak summer and the winter ski season.

Costs (indicative)

Kashmir spans budget to luxury. Gondola tickets, pony rides and local guides are extra — agree prices upfront to avoid overcharging, and confirm current gondola fares before you go.

Responsible travel

Stick to marked areas in the meadows, avoid littering the valleys and gondola stations, and support local artisans and homestays. Bargain fairly and respectfully.

FAQ

How high does the Gulmarg Gondola go?

Phase 2 reaches Apharwat Peak at about 3,980 m (13,780 ft), making it one of the highest cable cars in the world.

Can you visit Gulmarg and Pahalgam in one trip?

Yes — they're on opposite sides of Srinagar, so a common plan is Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam over about 5 days.
