TrainsLogisticsForeign Travelers

Indian railway stations can feel overwhelming at first: crowds, announcements, platform changes, chai sellers, porters, long footbridges, and trains that are much longer than visitors expect. Once you understand PNR, coach position, platform displays, and luggage habits, the system becomes far less intimidating.

The goal is to arrive early, read the right screens, keep your small bag close, and board the correct coach before the train starts moving.

Fast Plan

MomentDo this
Before stationSave ticket PDF, PNR, train number, coach, berth, and ID offline.
At stationCheck official display boards and NTES/railway apps for platform and delay updates.
Before boardingFind coach position and stand near the correct section of the platform.
OnboardChain large luggage when sleeping and keep valuables in a small bag near your body.

PNR, Train Number, Coach, and Berth

Your PNR is the booking reference. Your train number identifies the service. Your coach code tells you which carriage to board, and your berth or seat number tells you where to sit or sleep. Keep all four visible, not buried in email.

  • Carry the same ID used for booking; foreign travelers should carry passport.
  • Check whether your ticket is confirmed, RAC, or waitlisted before travel.
  • For e-tickets, keep a charged phone plus an offline screenshot or printout.

Finding the Platform and Coach

Platforms can change. Use official display boards, station announcements, NTES, and railway enquiry counters. Once on the platform, find coach-position indicators if available. Indian trains are long, and walking from one end after arrival can be stressful.

  • Arrive early at large stations such as New Delhi, Mumbai CSMT, Howrah, Chennai Central, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Varanasi, and Ahmedabad.
  • Ask railway staff or families if confused, not random touts offering paid help.
  • Do not board the wrong train just because it is on the expected platform. Check train number.

Food, Water, and Toilets

Stations range from basic to modern. Large stations have food stalls, packaged water, waiting rooms, toilets, and sometimes retiring rooms or lounges. Food quality varies. For longer journeys, carry water and a simple meal even if you plan to buy onboard.

  • Use sealed bottled water or official packaged drinking water.
  • Choose hot, high-turnover food and avoid risky leftovers before a long ride.
  • Carry tissues, sanitizer, and small change for toilets.
  • If ordering e-catering, use authorized channels rather than random links.

Luggage, Porters, and Safety

Crowds are normal; panic is optional. Keep passport, wallet, phone, and cards in a small bag that stays with you. Larger luggage can be chained under berths on overnight trains. Porters can be helpful, but agree on the price before they lift your bags.

  • Use a small cable lock or chain for overnight luggage.
  • Do not leave bags unattended while buying food or checking boards.
  • Avoid sharing personal itinerary details with strangers.
  • For railway complaints or assistance, use Rail Madad or helpline 139 where available.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Arriving five minutes before departure at a large unfamiliar station.
  • Boarding by destination name without checking train number and coach.
  • Keeping passport or cards in a suitcase under the berth.
  • Trusting unofficial agents who say your train is cancelled or your ticket is invalid.

Plan-Ready Checklist

  • Ticket, PNR, train number, coach, berth, and passport ready.
  • Platform and delay checked through official sources.
  • Water, snacks, sanitizer, tissues, and power bank packed.
  • Valuables separated from main luggage.

Verify before you go: Train timings, platforms, coach positions, and rules change. Use IRCTC, NTES, official station displays, Rail Madad, and railway staff for current information.
