Karnataka, India

Karnataka packs UNESCO ruins, coffee hills, beaches and some of India's finest temple carving into one state. This 10-day itinerary strings the best together with a sensible, low-backtrack route.

HeritageCultureRoad Trip

Few Indian states offer the range Karnataka does: the boulder-strewn ruins of Hampi, the coffee-scented hills of Coorg and Chikmagalur, palm-fringed Konkan beaches, and temple towns whose carving stops you in your tracks. Ten days is enough to sample all four worlds without living in a car.

The route at a glance

Bengaluru → Mysore (2) → Coorg (2) → coast: Gokarna/Murudeshwar (2) → Hampi (2) → back, with the Hoysala temples of Belur/Halebidu as an option on the Chikmagalur side. Adapt the loop to your arrival/exit cities.

Day-by-day

Days 1–2: Mysore

Start with the palace city — the dazzling Mysore Palace, Chamundi Hill, Devaraja Market, and (nearby) the intricate Hoysala temple at Somanathapura.

Days 3–4: Coorg (Kodagu)

Coffee estates, Abbey Falls, Dubare elephant camp and misty viewpoints — Karnataka's most relaxing hill escape.

Days 5–6: The coast — Gokarna & Murudeshwar

Swap the hills for the Konkan: Gokarna's beach-and-temple town vibe and Murudeshwar's giant seaside Shiva statue.

Days 7–8: Hampi

The surreal UNESCO ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire among giant boulders — temples, bazaars, coracle rides and sunsets. A highlight of any India trip.

Days 9–10: Return via temple/coffee country

Break the journey back through Chikmagalur's coffee hills or the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu, then close the loop.

How to travel

A hired car with driver is the most flexible way to link hills, coast and ruins. Trains and buses connect the bigger towns (and overnight trains save time to Hampi/Hospet). Distances are real — several legs run 4–6 hours.

Best time to visit

October to March is ideal statewide — pleasant on the coast and in the hills, and comfortable at Hampi (which is punishingly hot in summer). The monsoon (June–September) makes Coorg and the Ghats lush but wet.

Where to stay

Homestays in Coorg and Chikmagalur (estate stays are wonderful), beach guesthouses on the coast, and a range from budget to boutique at Hampi/Hospet and Mysore.

Costs (indicative)

Karnataka spans backpacker to boutique. The car is the main fixed cost; estate homestays and Hampi guides add modestly. Very good value overall.

Responsible travel

At Hampi, don't climb on or deface the monuments; support local coracle and guide cooperatives. In Coorg, choose estates that treat workers and elephants well. Keep the beaches plastic-free.

FAQ

Is 10 days enough for Karnataka?

Yes for a "greatest hits" loop of Mysore, Coorg, the coast and Hampi. To add Badami/Aihole/Pattadakal or Chikmagalur properly, stretch to 12–14 days.

Can I do this by public transport?

Possible but slower; a car makes the hills-to-coast-to-Hampi hops far easier. Overnight trains help for the Hampi leg.
