Quick take: Lakshadweep is not a turn-up-and-see island holiday. It is permit-first travel into a small coral archipelago with limited beds, limited freshwater, limited transport and extraordinary lagoons. If you plan it like Goa, you will be frustrated. If you plan it like a fragile reef journey, it can be unforgettable.
Permit first, then flights
Visitors need an entry permit for Lakshadweep. Use official UT ePermit systems or authorized package channels before you commit to non-refundable travel. Your permit defines where you can go; it is not a blank pass to wander across islands. Keep printed and offline copies because island connectivity can be patchy.
Which island should you choose?
- Agatti: The air gateway and a practical base for lagoon views, short stays and onward transfers.
- Bangaram and Thinnakara: Dreamy lagoon scenery when packages and permissions are operating.
- Kadmat: Often associated with diving, kayaking and longer beach stays.
- Kavaratti: Administrative and cultural context, subject to permit and package access.
- Minicoy: Distinct culture and southern geography, but it needs more deliberate planning.
How to reach
Most travelers route through Kochi. Flights to Agatti are the fastest option, while passenger ships operate on longer schedules and need patience. Weather, maintenance and seat limits can affect both. Never build a tight international connection immediately after leaving Lakshadweep.
Best time
- October to May: Best visitor window for calmer seas and clearer water.
- December to March: High-demand months. Book early and expect limited inventory.
- June to September: Monsoon affects sea movement, water activities and operations. Go only if you understand the limitations.
Reef etiquette
Do not stand on coral, do not break coral for photos, do not collect shells, do not chase turtles, do not throw food into the water, and do not anchor casual boats on reef patches. Use reef-safe sunscreen, wear a rash guard instead of overusing lotion and listen to local boat crews about currents.
Local culture and rules
Lakshadweep is socially conservative compared with many mainland beach destinations. Dress modestly away from resort beaches, ask before photographing people, and understand that alcohol rules are restrictive, with only limited exceptions in specific tourist settings such as Bangaram depending on current policy. Do not carry assumptions from other beach states.
Suggested 5-day plan
- Day 1: Kochi to Agatti. Lagoon walk, no rush.
- Day 2: Snorkelling or kayaking with a responsible operator.
- Day 3: Authorized Bangaram/Thinnakara excursion or stay, if included in permit/package.
- Day 4: Slow reef day, village sensitivity and sunset.
- Day 5: Fly or sail out with a buffer.
Who should skip it?
Skip Lakshadweep if you need nightlife, unlimited restaurant choice, spontaneous island-hopping, cheap last-minute rooms or guaranteed water sports every day. Choose it if you value quiet lagoons, careful travel, clear rules and the privilege of visiting a small reef system without overwhelming it.
