Two serene temple towns on the Narmada: Maheshwar, with its riverside ghats, queen's fort and famous handloom, and Omkareshwar, an Om-shaped island holding one of Shiva's twelve Jyotirlingas.

HeritageSpiritualCulture

On the banks of the sacred Narmada in western Madhya Pradesh sit two of central India's most atmospheric small towns — one a serene weaving-and-ghats town shaped by a remarkable queen, the other a pilgrim island in the shape of the sacred syllable "Om". Together they make a calm, culture-rich couple of days.

Maheshwar

Maheshwar is inseparable from Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar, the revered 18th-century Maratha queen who made it her capital. The Ahilya (Holkar) Fort rises above a sweep of beautiful stone ghats on the Narmada — Ahilya, Peshwa, Mahila and Phanse ghats — where boats drift past temples at sunrise and sunset. It's a strikingly photogenic riverfront, and quieter than the famous ghats of Varanasi.

Maheshwari handloom

Maheshwar is also one of India's finest handloom centres, home of the elegant Maheshwari saree, a tradition patronised by Ahilyabai herself. You can watch weavers at work and buy directly — a lovely, responsible souvenir.

Omkareshwar

About 60–70 km away, Omkareshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva — among the holiest Shiva shrines in India — set on Mandhata island, which is shaped like the "Om" symbol, in the middle of the Narmada. Pilgrims circumambulate the island (the parikrama), cross by bridge or boat, and visit the Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar temples. Even for non-pilgrims, the river setting and the ghats are deeply peaceful.

How to plan them

The two pair naturally over a couple of days, and both combine well with Mandu (the ruined hilltop city) nearby. Sunrise or sunset at the Maheshwar ghats is the highlight — plan your timing around it.

Best time to visit

October to March for pleasant weather. Major Shiva festivals (like Mahashivratri) bring big crowds to Omkareshwar — plan accordingly.

How to reach

The nearest airport and major railhead is Indore, roughly a couple of hours away; both towns are reached by road from there.

Where to stay

Maheshwar has heritage stays (including part of the Ahilya Fort) and simpler guesthouses; Omkareshwar has basic pilgrim accommodation. Maheshwar makes the more comfortable base.

Costs (indicative)

Budget-friendly. Boat rides, temple visits and handloom shopping are the main spends; Maheshwari sarees are worth buying directly from weavers.

Responsible travel

These are living pilgrimage sites and a working weaving town — dress modestly at temples and ghats, don't litter the Narmada, avoid single-use plastic, and buy handloom from genuine weaver cooperatives.
