The Peaceful Retreat of Mai Chau
Located only 140km west of Hanoi, Mai Chau is a green valley surrounded by dramatic karst mountains. Unlike Sapa, the valley floor here is flat, making it ideal for leisurely bicycle rides through rice fields and peaceful villages.
Cycling Routes through ethnic villages
Rent a bicycle for about 50,000 VND ($2 USD) per day and explore these traditional villages:
- Lac Village (Ban Lac): The oldest stilt-house village, home to the White Thai ethnic group. Great for traditional textiles.
- Pom Coong Village: A quieter neighbor to Lac village, perfect for seeing local agriculture and stilt architecture.
- Nha Pa & Cha Long Villages: Off-the-beaten-path routes where you can see farmers harvesting corn and rice without the crowds.
Staying in a Traditional Stilt House
Stilt houses in Mai Chau are made of bamboo and timber, raised about 1.5 to 2 meters off the ground. Staying in one is an essential Mai Chau experience. At night, hosts prepare a feast of grilled river fish, sticky rice, and local herbs, followed by performances of Thai folk dance and communal drinking of Ruou Can (traditional rice wine drunk through long straws).
Getting There
Take a shared limousine or local bus from Hanoi's My Dinh station. The journey takes about 3 to 4 hours, crossing the scenic Thung Khe Pass, which is often shrouded in mist.
