Welcome to Asia's Cleanest Village
Located in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, Mawlynnong gained global fame when it was declared the "Cleanest Village in Asia" in 2003 by Discover India magazine. Home to about 100 Khasi families, Mawlynnong has established a self-sustaining eco-tourism model where community discipline, cleanliness, and environmental care are a way of life.
The Riwai Living Root Bridge
Just 2 kilometers before reaching Mawlynnong village lies **Riwai**. A short 15-minute downhill walk over stone steps leads to a majestic Living Root Bridge. Grown by the local Khasi tribe over generations, this bridge is formed by guiding the aerial roots of the *Ficus elastica* (Indian rubber tree) across a rushing stream using hollow bamboo trunks. Unlike concrete bridges, these living bridges become stronger over time as the root network thickens.
Village Etiquette and Rules for Visitors
Mawlynnong is a residential village, not a theme park. Visitors must respect local community rules:
- Littering is Strictly Prohibited: Every corner of the village has handmade, cone-shaped bamboo trash bins. Throw all waste in them.
- Do Not Pluck Flowers: The village is filled with beautiful gardens of orchids, pitcher plants, and colorful hedges. Plucking them is fined.
- Plastic-Free: Try not to carry single-use plastic bottles. If you do, ensure you take them back with you.
- Respect Privacy: Ask permission before photographing locals, especially children. Do not wander into private household yards.
Local Cuisine and Homestays
Staying in Mawlynnong is a peaceful experience. Accommodation consists of simple, clean, wooden homestays run by local families, costing ₹1,500 - ₹2,500 per night. Food is home-cooked, utilizing local organic produce. Try **Jadoh** (rice cooked with meat and local spices) or simple stir-fried wild vegetables and dal. The village is completely quiet after 8:00 PM.
Day Trips and Nearby Attractions
- Sky View: A 85-foot-tall viewing tower constructed entirely of bamboo. Visitors can climb it for a small fee of ₹30 to enjoy views extending over the plains of Bangladesh.
- Balancing Rock: A unique geological phenomenon where a massive boulder sits balanced on a tiny rock structure, untouched by earthquakes or weather over centuries.
