North Sikkim is the state at its most dramatic — the flower valley of Yumthang and the sacred high-altitude Gurudongmar Lake, reached from the villages of Lachung and Lachen. Here's how to plan it, permits and all.

North Sikkim is where the state turns wild and high — a land of alpine flower valleys, snow plateaus and one of the highest sacred lakes on earth. It's remote, weather-dependent and permit-controlled, and is done from two base villages: Lachung (for Yumthang) and Lachen (for Gurudongmar).

Yumthang Valley and Zero Point

From Lachung, the road climbs to the Yumthang Valley — the "Valley of Flowers" of Sikkim — where the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary bursts into bloom from roughly late February to mid-June, with hot springs and river meadows. Beyond it, Zero Point (Yumesamdong) at around 4,570 m is a snow-covered plateau at the end of the motorable road.

Gurudongmar Lake

From Lachen, an even higher pre-dawn drive reaches Gurudongmar Lake at about 5,430 m (17,800 ft) — one of the highest lakes in the world, sacred to Buddhists and Sikhs, and often frozen. The altitude is serious; acclimatize, go slow, and skip it if you feel unwell.

Permits and restrictions (important)

  • North Sikkim is a protected area — you must travel with a registered operator on a permit (usually a shared/private jeep tour from Gangtok), not independently.
  • Foreign nationals are NOT allowed at Gurudongmar Lake or Nathula. Foreigners can visit Lachen, Lachung and Yumthang with the required permits (ILP + Protected Area Permit).
  • Access can close without notice due to weather, roadwork or administrative orders (Gurudongmar in particular has faced temporary closures) — confirm the current status before you book.

Best time to visit

Late February–June for Yumthang's flowers and October–early December for clear skies. Winter brings heavy snow (and frequent closures at the highest points); the monsoon risks landslides. High points can be snowbound any time.

How to reach

Trips are organised from Gangtok: a jeep tour to Lachung/Lachen (overnight in the villages), with early-morning runs up to Yumthang/Zero Point and Gurudongmar. The gateway airport/rail is Pakyong/Bagdogra and NJP.

Where to stay

Simple guesthouses and homestays in Lachung and Lachen (this is remote country — don't expect luxury). Tours include these stays.

Costs (indicative)

Sold as multi-day jeep packages including permits, stays and driver; shared tours are cheaper than private. Confirm inclusions and current access before paying.

Responsible travel

These are sacred, fragile high-altitude ecosystems — do not litter, don't touch or enter the lakes, don't pick flowers in the sanctuary, and carry out all waste. Respect local customs and the villages' limited resources.

FAQ

Can foreigners visit Gurudongmar Lake?

No — Gurudongmar (like Nathula) is off-limits to foreign nationals. Foreigners can still visit Lachen, Lachung and Yumthang with permits.

Is Gurudongmar always open?

No — it can be closed by weather or administrative orders, sometimes for extended periods. Always check the current status before planning around it.
