In this guide
High in the Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu, Ooty and Coonoor are the quintessential South Indian hill stations — rolling tea gardens, cool air, colonial-era bungalows and a famous little train. They sit close together, so most people base in one and day-trip the other.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (toy train)
The star attraction is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line (part of the "Mountain Railways of India"). Built by the British and opened in 1908, this metre-gauge marvel is the only rack railway in India and has the steepest track in Asia, climbing from Mettupalayam to Ooty (about 46 km) through 208 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges — steam-hauled on the lower section, diesel above Coonoor. The short, scenic Ooty–Coonoor leg is the most popular ride; tickets sell out, so book well in advance.
Ooty (Udhagamandalam)
The "Queen of Hill Stations" offers the Government Botanical Gardens, Ooty Lake (boating), Doddabetta Peak (the highest in the Nilgiris) and tea. It's the busier, more commercial of the two — lovely, but crowded in season.
Coonoor
Quieter and, for many, more charming, Coonoor has Sim's Park, the Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock viewpoints, and some of the best tea estates and tasting rooms in the hills. A good base if you want calm over crowds.

Plan My Trip →Best time to visit
October to June is the season, with pleasant weather and clear tea-garden views; April–May is peak (and busy). The monsoon (roughly July–September, plus the northeast monsoon later) brings mist, fewer crowds and occasional landslides on the ghat roads.
How to reach
The classic approach is the toy train from Mettupalayam (reached via Coimbatore, the nearest airport and major railhead). By road, it's a winding hairpin climb up from Mettupalayam/Coimbatore. Book the popular train legs ahead.
Where to stay
Everything from budget lodges to colonial-era heritage bungalows and tea-estate stays. Coonoor's estate stays are especially atmospheric.
Costs (indicative)
Affordable to mid-range; heritage bungalows and estate stays are the splurge. The toy train is cheap — the challenge is getting a seat, not the fare.
Responsible travel
Book the train through official channels, don't litter the viewpoints or gardens, respect tea-estate workers and property, and drive carefully on the hairpins (and give way to the train).
FAQ
How do I book the Ooty toy train?
Through Indian Railways (IRCTC) or at the station counter — the scenic Ooty–Coonoor leg is very popular and books out, so reserve early; unreserved seats can mean long queues.
Ooty or Coonoor — where should I stay?
Ooty for sights and buzz, Coonoor for calm, tea estates and viewpoints. Many split their time or base in Coonoor and day-trip Ooty.
