In this guide
North of Ahmedabad, two monuments capture the golden age of the Solanki (Chaulukya) dynasty — and together make one of Gujarat's most rewarding heritage day-trips. Patan has an inverted temple hidden underground; Modhera has a temple built to catch the sunrise.
Rani ki Vav, Patan
Rani ki Vav — the "Queen's Stepwell" — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2014), built around 1063 by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband, King Bhimdev I. Conceived as an inverted temple celebrating the sanctity of water, it descends through seven levels of stairs lined with more than a thousand sculptures — deities, celestial maidens and intricate panels in the Maru-Gurjara style. It's so iconic it appears on the Indian ₹100 note.
Also in Patan
Patan is famous for its exquisite Patola silk — double-ikat weaving so painstaking that a single saree can take months. A handful of workshops still practise it; watching the process is memorable.
Modhera Sun Temple
About 35 km away, the Sun Temple at Modhera was built in 1026 CE, dedicated to Surya, the sun god. Its three linked elements — the Surya Kund (a magnificent stepped tank), the assembly hall (Sabha Mandap) and the shrine — are aligned so that light plays across the temple, and the carving rivals anything of its era. The annual Modhera Dance Festival (usually January) stages classical dance against the temple backdrop.

Plan My Trip →How to visit both
Patan and Modhera are close together and are usually done as a day trip from Ahmedabad (roughly 2 hours each way by road). A common plan: Modhera in the morning light, Patan's Rani ki Vav and a Patola workshop in the afternoon.
Best time to visit
October to March for comfortable sightseeing; the Modhera Dance Festival falls in January. Summers are very hot.
How to reach
Base in Ahmedabad (major airport and rail hub) and drive out; a hired car is the easiest way to link both sites in a day. Patan also has rail connections.
Where to stay
Most travellers stay in Ahmedabad and day-trip; there are simpler options in Patan/Mehsana if you want to slow down.
Costs (indicative)
Modest monument entry fees plus transport. Patola silk is genuinely expensive to buy (it's extraordinarily labour-intensive) — but watching the weaving is free-to-cheap and worthwhile.
Responsible travel
Don't touch or climb on the carvings at either site, follow ASI rules, and if you buy Patola, buy from genuine weaving families to keep the craft alive.
