The Highest Point of West Bengal
Sandakphu, standing at an altitude of 3,636 meters (11,930 feet), is the highest peak in the state of West Bengal. Situated on the border of India and Nepal, the peak lies along the Singalila Ridge. It is globally famous for offering one of the most comprehensive panoramic views of the Himalayas, including four of the world's five highest peaks: Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and the entire Kanchenjunga massif.
The "Sleeping Buddha" Phenomenon
The main highlight of the Sandakphu trek is the view of the **Sleeping Buddha**. When viewed from the Singalila Ridge at sunrise, the peaks of the Kanchenjunga range (including Kumbhakarna, Kanchenjunga, and Pandim) form a silhouette that resembles the shape of a giant reclining Lord Buddha. Under clear autumn skies, this massive snow structure turns shades of pink, gold, and white.
Trek Routes and Land Rover Options
The standard trek starts from the border town of **Manebhanjan** (located 28 km from Darjeeling):
- Standard Trek Route: Manebhanjan -> Chitrey -> Tonglu -> Tumling -> Kalipokhri -> Sandakphu -> Phalut. The trek takes 4 to 6 days. The trail winds along the international border, crossing between India and Nepal multiple times.
- Land Rover Option: For those who cannot trek, Manebhanjan has a historic fleet of vintage 1950s Land Rovers managed by the local association. You can hire a vehicle to drive you up the steep, boulder-strewn road to Sandakphu. Cost: ₹10,000 - ₹12,000 for a round trip.
Permits, Guides, and National Park Fees
The trail goes through the **Singalila National Park**:
- Permit Booking: You must purchase an entry permit at the Forest Department office in Manebhanjan. Cost: ₹200 for Indian nationals, ₹500 for foreigners.
- Mandatory Guide: It is legally mandatory to hire a registered local guide from the Manebhanjan Guide Association to accompany you. Guide fees are approximately ₹1,200 per day.
Teahouse Lodging along the Trail
Unlike remote camping treks in the Himalayas, Sandakphu is a **teahouse trek**. Every 5-10 km, you will find small villages (like Tumling and Kalipokhri) containing Nepalese wooden lodges. They offer basic wooden rooms, warm blankets, and freshly cooked plates of Dal-Bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetables). Room rates range from ₹1,000 to ₹1,800 per night.
Best Time to Visit
- October to November (Clear Sky Season): The best time for mountain photography. Skies are clear, though temperatures at Sandakphu can drop to -5°C at night.
- March to April (Rhododendron Season): The forest trails come alive with red, pink, and white rhododendron and magnolia blooms, offering beautiful forest walks.
