Shekhawati is Rajasthan's open-air art gallery — hundreds of merchant havelis covered in painted frescoes, in towns most tourists skip. Here's how to explore Mandawa, Nawalgarh and Fatehpur.

North of Jaipur, in the semi-arid Shekhawati region, lies one of India's most underrated heritage experiences: town after town of painted havelis — grand merchant mansions whose walls, courtyards and facades are covered in frescoes. It's often called the world's largest open-air art gallery, and it sees a fraction of Rajasthan's usual crowds.

Why Shekhawati exists

In the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy Marwari trading families built ornate havelis here and commissioned artists to cover them in murals — mythology, royal processions, and later trains, cars and gramophones as the outside world arrived. Many families moved away, leaving the mansions as an extraordinary, weathering archive of a mercantile golden age.

Where to go

Nawalgarh

Often called the region's fresco capital, with some of the best-preserved and most-visited havelis (several now run as museums).

Mandawa

The most popular base, thanks to its cluster of painted havelis and a fort-turned-heritage-hotel — a good, comfortable place to start.

Fatehpur, Dundlod and Mahansar

Quieter towns with beautiful, less-restored havelis for travellers who want to wander with barely another tourist in sight.

How to explore

Shekhawati rewards slow wandering on foot, ideally with a local guide who can unlock haveli gates and explain the murals. Two to three days lets you cover a few towns without rushing.

Best time to visit

October to March for comfortable weather. Summers are very hot on the Thar's fringe.

How to reach

Shekhawati is an easy add-on between Delhi/Jaipur and Bikaner. Mandawa and Nawalgarh are reachable by road from Jaipur in a few hours; there are also rail connections to Jhunjhunu and Sikar.

Where to stay

Several havelis and forts have been converted into characterful heritage hotels, especially in Mandawa and Nawalgarh — staying in one is part of the experience. Budget guesthouses exist too.

Costs (indicative)

Affordable to mid-range; heritage-hotel stays and guides add to it. Some private havelis charge a small entry/photography fee — carry cash.

Responsible travel

These frescoes are fragile and largely unprotected. Don't touch the paintings, ask before photographing inside private havelis, tip caretakers who open gates, and support restoration-minded stays and museums.
