Shillong, the 'Scotland of the East', mixes pine hills and waterfalls with a matrilineal Khasi culture and one of India's best café-and-music scenes. Here's how to plan Meghalaya's capital.

Hill StationCultureNature

Meghalaya's capital, Shillong, earned the nickname the "Scotland of the East" for its rolling pine hills, cool climate and lakes — but it's really its own thing: a hill city with a distinctive Khasi culture, a famous love of music, and some of the Northeast's best cafés. It's the natural base for exploring the wider Meghalaya highlands.

Things to do in and around Shillong

  • Umiam Lake (Barapani) — a big, scenic reservoir just outside town, good for viewpoints and boating.
  • Elephant Falls — a pretty three-tiered waterfall on the city's edge.
  • Laitlum Canyons — dramatic green gorges and ridge walks a short drive away.
  • Ward's Lake, Shillong Peak and the Don Bosco Museum (a superb introduction to Northeast cultures).
  • Police Bazaar — the buzzing commercial heart, and the café/music district.

Khasi culture

The Khasi are one of India's few matrilineal societies — lineage and property typically pass through the youngest daughter. Shillong's markets, food and festivals are a window into this culture, and it pairs naturally with day trips to Mawphlang's sacred groves and the living-root-bridge country around Cherrapunji.

Music and cafés

Shillong is often called India's "rock capital" — live music is woven into the city, and its café scene (great coffee, bakeries and views) is a big part of the appeal. Spend an evening following the music.

Best time to visit

October to April for clear, comfortable weather. The monsoon (Meghalaya is among the wettest places on earth) is spectacularly green but very wet — and the reason the waterfalls roar.

How to reach

Most travellers fly into Guwahati (Assam) and drive about 3 hours up to Shillong; Meghalaya also has a small airport at Umroi. Shared and private cabs are the norm.

Where to stay

Everything from budget guesthouses and homestays to boutique hotels and lakeside resorts at Umiam. Staying near Police Bazaar keeps cafés and transport close.

Costs (indicative)

Affordable to mid-range. A car for day trips (Laitlum, Cherrapunji, Mawphlang) is the main add-on.

Responsible travel

Respect Khasi customs and sacred groves (don't remove anything from Mawphlang), support local cafés, musicians and homestays, and keep the waterfalls and viewpoints litter-free.

FAQ

Why is Shillong called the Scotland of the East?

For its rolling pine-covered hills, lakes and cool, misty climate that reminded the British of the Scottish highlands.

How many days do you need in Shillong?

Two to three for the city and nearby sights, or use it as a base and add Cherrapunji/Mawlynnong day trips for a longer Meghalaya trip.
