Tarkarli and Malvan are the Konkan coast at its clearest — turquoise water good enough for scuba, a sea fort built by Shivaji, and some of India's best seafood. Here's how to plan a beach-and-diving trip.

Down in the Sindhudurg district, where Maharashtra's Konkan coast nears Goa, Tarkarli and Malvan offer something the state's busier beaches can't: genuinely clear, turquoise water. It's one of the few places in India where you can scuba dive and snorkel over reefs — and then eat spectacular seafood afterwards.

Tarkarli — clear water and water sports

Tarkarli is known for its calm, transparent sea — on a sunny day you can see the sea bed several metres down. That clarity makes it one of India's more accessible spots for scuba diving and snorkeling, with dives organised even for non-swimmers and children (subject to height/health rules). Beyond diving, there's a long clean beach, backwater boat rides, and dolphin-spotting trips.

Malvan and Sindhudurg Fort

Neighbouring Malvan is the historic and culinary heart of the area. Just offshore stands Sindhudurg Fort, a 17th-century sea fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on a rocky island — reached by a short boat ride, with legend holding that impressions of Shivaji's hand and footprints are preserved within. It's an atmospheric, wave-lashed piece of Maratha history.

Malvani cuisine — come hungry

Malvan gives its name to Malvani cuisine, one of India's great coastal food traditions — coconut-rich curries, fresh fish, prawns, crab and specialities like sol kadhi (a kokum-and-coconut cooler). Eating your way through Malvan is reason enough to visit.

Best time to visit

October to May is the season, with the clearest water and best diving conditions typically in the drier winter and early-summer months. Diving and boating usually pause during the monsoon (June–September) when the sea is rough — so avoid those months for water activities.

How to reach

The coast is reached by road from Mumbai, Pune or Goa; the nearest railheads are on the scenic Konkan Railway (Kudal/Sindhudurg/Kankavali), and the nearest airports are Goa (Dabolim/Mopa) and the newer Sindhudurg airport with limited flights.

Where to stay

Tarkarli and nearby Devbagh have beach resorts, homestays and Konkan-style guesthouses; Malvan town has budget options. Book ahead for peak winter weekends.

Costs (indicative)

Affordable to mid-range. Scuba/snorkeling packages, boat rides and the Sindhudurg fort ferry are the main add-ons — confirm current dive prices and safety credentials directly with operators.

Responsible travel

Choose diving operators with proper safety standards and reef-friendly practices — don't touch or stand on coral, and don't collect shells or marine life. Support local Malvani eateries and homestays, and keep the beaches plastic-free.

FAQ

Can beginners scuba dive in Tarkarli?

When is the best time for Tarkarli scuba diving?

Roughly October to May, when the sea is calm and clear. Diving generally stops during the rough monsoon months (June–September).
