Tawang: The Land of Monpa Culture

Perched at an elevation of approximately 3,048 meters (10,000 feet) in the northwestern corner of Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang is a stunning mountain town bordering Tibet and Bhutan. It is famous for its snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, high-altitude lakes, and deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist culture, preserved by the local Monpa tribe.

Must-Visit Attractions in Tawang

1. Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgey Lhatse)

Founded in 1680-1681 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, the Tawang Monastery is the largest monastery in India and the second-largest in the world after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. It houses over 300 Buddhist monks, a valuable library of ancient scriptures, and a majestic 18-foot gilded statue of Lord Buddha.

2. Sela Pass and Sela Lake

Sela Pass, situated at a height of 13,700 feet (4,170 meters), is the gateway to Tawang. The pass is covered in snow for most of the year. Right next to the pass lies the beautiful Sela Lake, which remains frozen during the peak winter months.

3. Bumla Pass and Madhuri Lake

Bumla Pass is located 37 km from Tawang at the Indo-China border (15,200 feet). Visitors can interact with Indian Army personnel and view the border checkpost. On the way lies **Sangetsar Lake**, commonly known as Madhuri Lake (after actress Madhuri Dixit shot a film here), featuring dead tree trunks standing in the middle of clear waters.

Arunachal Pradesh Permits

Arunachal Pradesh is a protected border state, requiring special entry permits:

  • Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian Citizens: Mandatory. Can be applied online (arunachalilp.com) for ₹100 - ₹400 depending on urgency. Requires photo and ID proof.
  • Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Foreigners: Foreign nationals must travel in a group of at least two people and obtain a PAP through registered tour operators. The permit costs around $50 USD and is valid for 30 days.
  • Bumla Pass Special Permit: Requires an additional permit from the Deputy Commissioner's office in Tawang, which must be stamped by the Indian Army. Travel agents in Tawang can arrange this for a fee of ₹500 - ₹1,000.
