HeritageHistoryTemples

In the fertile Kaveri delta of Tamil Nadu, the Chola dynasty built temples that still take the breath away a thousand years on. Thanjavur's Brihadeeswarar Temple is the greatest of them — and the centrepiece of the UNESCO-listed "Great Living Chola Temples", a trio of granite masterpieces that are still active places of worship today.

Thanjavur's Brihadeeswarar Temple (the Big Temple)

Built by the emperor Raja Raja Chola I between about 1003 and 1010 CE, the Brihadeeswarar (Peruvudaiyar) Temple is a colossus of granite dedicated to Shiva. Its soaring vimana (sanctum tower) was among the tallest of its age, crowned by a single massive capstone; a giant monolithic Nandi faces the shrine. Over a millennium later it remains a living temple — daily worship, festivals, music and ritual continue as they have for a thousand years. It was inscribed by UNESCO in 1987.

The other two Chola temples

The site was extended in 2004 to include two more Chola marvels nearby, and seeing all three tells the full story:

  • Gangaikonda Cholapuram — built by Rajendra I (completed c. 1035) as his new capital's great temple, with a gracefully curved tower.
  • Airavatesvara Temple, Darasuram (near Kumbakonam) — built by Rajaraja II, smaller but exquisitely detailed, with a stone chariot-style mandapa and musical steps.

Beyond the temples in Thanjavur

  • Thanjavur Maratha Palace and the remarkable Saraswathi Mahal Library (one of the oldest in Asia).
  • Tanjore paintings — the town's signature gold-leaf art form; watch artists at work and buy from genuine studios.

Best time to visit

October to March for comfortable temple-hopping; the Kaveri delta is very hot the rest of the year. Early morning and evening are best for light and cooler stone.

How to reach

Thanjavur (Tanjore) has its own railway station and good road links; the nearest major airport is Tiruchirappalli (Trichy). Kumbakonam is the handy base for Darasuram, and Gangaikonda Cholapuram is a drive out toward Chidambaram.

Where to stay

Thanjavur has budget hotels to comfortable mid-range options; Kumbakonam makes a good second base for the Darasuram and delta temples.

Costs (indicative)

Very affordable — temple entry is free/nominal (small camera charges may apply), plus transport between the three sites. A guide greatly enriches the history and iconography.

Responsible travel

These are active temples: dress modestly, remove footwear where required, follow photography rules inside sanctums, and don't touch or climb the carvings. Buy Tanjore paintings from genuine artist studios.
