The North-South Railway: The Reunification Express
The Reunification Express is the train line connecting Hanoi in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south, running 1,726km along the coastline. It is a slow, nostalgic, and incredibly scenic way to see the country.
Understanding Train Cabin Classes
Vietnamese trains offer four main ticket classes:
- Soft Berth (4-Sleeper): The most comfortable option for overnight journeys. Four beds per lockable cabin. Highly recommended.
- Hard Berth (6-Sleeper): Six beds per cabin. The top bunks can be cramped and have very little headroom. Good for budget travelers.
- Air-conditioned Soft Seats: Comfortable aircraft-style seats. Good for short daytime journeys (under 5 hours).
- Hard Seats: Wooden benches without air conditioning. Best avoided unless you are seeking a highly rustic experience.
The Scenic Highlight: The Hai Van Pass
The most spectacular section of the railway is the stretch between **Hue and Da Nang**. The train winds along the steep cliffs of the **Hai Van Pass**, with the mountains on one side and the East Vietnam Sea on the other. Sit on the left side when traveling south (or right when traveling north) for the best ocean views.
How to Book Tickets Safely
Always book through the official Vietnam Railways website: dsvn.vn. Many third-party websites look official but charge hefty commissions. Bookings open 30 to 60 days in advance.
