The road to Tawang is one of India's great Himalayan journeys — over Sela Pass to the largest monastery in the country, via the valleys of Dirang and Sangti. Here's the route, permits and how to pace it.

Road TripMountainsCulture

The journey to Tawang, in the far west of Arunachal Pradesh near the Bhutan and Tibet borders, is a bucket-list Himalayan road trip — monasteries, high passes, war memorials and quiet valleys, climbing from subtropical foothills to snowbound heights. Because it's a sensitive border region, it needs permits and careful pacing.

The route

The classic drive from Assam runs Guwahati/Tezpur → Bomdila → Dirang → Sela Pass → Tawang, then back the same way — usually 5–7 days to do it comfortably.

Bomdila and Dirang

Bomdila has a hilltop monastery and apple orchards. Dirang (~1,500 m) is a lovely valley halt with hot springs, a roughly 500-year-old stone fortress (Dirang Dzong) and a National Yak Research Centre.

Sangti Valley

Near Dirang, the peaceful Sangti Valley is a winter home of the rare black-necked crane (roughly November–March) — a beautiful, birdy detour.

Sela Pass

The road crosses Sela Pass at about 4,170 m (13,700 ft), one of the highest motorable passes in the world, with the sacred Sela Lake beside it. It can be snowbound and is the trip's biggest altitude jump.

Tawang

Tawang Monastery is the largest monastery in India (founded 1680), a stunning fortress-like gompa above the valley and a major centre of Tibetan Buddhism. Add the Tawang War Memorial, Madhuri (Shonga-tser) Lake, and — with an extra permit — the Bum La border pass.

Permits (essential)

  • Indian citizens (non-residents of Arunachal) need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter the state — apply online or through an agent.
  • Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP), generally arranged through a registered operator and often requiring a group.
  • Border points like Bum La require an additional special permit obtained in Tawang.

Best time to visit

March to October broadly, with spring and autumn best for clear skies; Sela Pass can close with snow in deep winter. Sangti's cranes are a winter (Nov–Mar) attraction. Avoid the peak monsoon for landslide-prone roads.

How to reach and pace it

Fly to Guwahati or Tezpur (Assam), then drive. Don't rush the altitude — a night in Dirang and another before/at Tawang helps. Roads are slow, winding and weather-dependent, so build in buffer days.

Where to stay

Guesthouses and homestays in Bomdila, Dirang and Tawang; monastery-view rooms in Tawang are worth requesting. Facilities are simple in this remote region.

Costs (indicative)

Usually done as a multi-day car/jeep trip (driver + permits + stays). Confirm current ILP/PAP rules and Bum La permit availability with your operator.

Responsible travel

Respect monastery etiquette and the region's Monpa culture, don't disturb the black-necked cranes at Sangti, carry out all waste at high-altitude stops, and use registered local operators (also a permit requirement).
