About Chilling

Chilling is a small hamlet in the Sham area of Ladakh’s Leh district, set beside the Zanskar River at about 3,230 m. It is the road-head for the Zanskar gorge: summer rafting trips on the river typically run downstream from Chilling to Nimmu, and the standard winter Chadar trek over the frozen Zanskar begins near here.

Chilling is where the road ends and the Zanskar gorge begins — the put-in for summer rafting runs down to Nimmu, and the approach point for the winter walk on the frozen river.
