About Hemis Monastery

Hemis Monastery is the largest and wealthiest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh, located in the Hemis village near Leh. Founded in 1630, it is a stunning example of Tibetan Buddhist architecture perched on a cliff overlooking the Indus River valley. The monastery is renowned for its annual Hemis festival, colorful prayer halls, ancient manuscripts, and a significant collection of Buddhist art and artifacts.

💡Why Visit?

Hemis offers an authentic deep dive into Ladakhi Buddhist culture, spectacular mountain vistas, and access to one of the Himalayas' most important monastic centers. The annual Hemis Tsechu festival in July, featuring masked dances and vibrant ceremonies, is a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.
