Padum is the main town of Zanskar and the administrative headquarters of Zanskar district in Ladakh, at about 3,575 m. Named after the Buddhist master Padmasambhava, it was historically one of the two capitals of the Zanskar Kingdom alongside Zangla. In winter, when snow closes the high passes into the valley, the traditional overland route to Padum has been the walk down the frozen Zanskar River now sold as the Chadar trek.
